Obituary of Don A. Sommer Sr.
Don A. Sommer Sr., 83, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Embassy Manor Nursing Home in Edison, New Jersey.
Don was born in Newark, New Jersey and spent his childhood years in Union, New Jersey. He has lived in Edison for the last sixty-five years.
Don proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1966. Semper Fi! He was employed by Engelhard-BASF for over forty years.
Don’s greatest passion was helping others. He joined the Edison First Aid Squad #1 in the 1980’s and proudly answered calls for over twenty-five years. He became Captain of the squad, serving alongside the most dedicated volunteers in New Jersey.
Don was a fan of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. He was an avid reader of World War II history. He also loved watching movies while sitting on his favorite chair at home. Don was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Thelma; his wife, Patricia; his son, Don Sommer Jr; and his daughter-in-law, Kelly Sommer.
Don is survived by his son, Duane Sommer; grandsons, Alex and Chris; his sister, Bonnie and her husband Gary of Florida.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday March 20, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue, Edison. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 21st at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthew the Apostle Church, Edison. Cremation is private.
