Uncle Pat...I hold Uncle Pat close to my heart. He was like a second father to me. I have so many fond memories that will last my lifetime. I’d like to share a few...
My family moved to Jersey, our house wasn’t quite ready yet and we stayed with Aunt Eileen and Uncle Pat. I was starting my first year at St. Matthew’s Catholic School. Oh boy I was soooo scared. Uncle Pat was always chill and to the point. “Everything is gonna be fine boy! What are you scared for?” Followed by his deep Irish laugh. He was right. I loved that about him. He had a way of relaxing you and kept life to the point without the stress.
My first puck drop! Hockey. Uncle Pat introduced me to watching Ice Hockey. Specifically Devils hockey. The dark downstairs mancave. Sparky and Boots on the floor, cigar smoke hovering in the air like a morning fog. Chips on our laps. Love the sport till this day. Added bonus? Banging on the drums under the slanted ceiling staircase when I thought nobody was watching.
My mom got I’ll from cancer, Uncle Pat and Aunt Eileen came up and stayed with us and helped with her care at home. Not days, not weeks, but months. Patiently and lovingly. Oh how much my Mom loved them being there. Convinced they added time to her life. I’ll never forget that, it was gift having them there, We needed them.
On a lighter note, I can tell you right now nobody, yeah nobody can cook a breakfast like a Uncle Pat breakfast! Eggs, toast, bacon...OMG the bacon. Simple and to the point. The way we all should love it. Breakfast, family, and life.
I’m going to miss my uncle, my godfather. Going to miss the breakfast, the hockey, the cigars, sharing the sports section of the paper, bakery runs, and most of all genuine and to the point. I looked at the stars tonight and prayed. Harder than usual, but that’s because the stars are a little brighter.
I love you Uncle Pat
Your nephew,
Kevin Bartle
