Obituary of Edward A. Chilton

Edward Alonzo Chilton died peacefully in his home on March 27, 2018 in New Brunswick, NJ after a long illness. He was 91.

Edward was born on August 17, 1926 in Jersey City, NJ. He graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City, and received a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now UMDNJ).  Edward served briefly in the US Navy. He worked for the Bendix Corp. for 42 years as an electrical and aerospace engineer before retiring in 1992.  Edward designed guidance systems for the NASA space program, holds numerous patents for his designs, and was a contributor to the United States’ Apollo space program that placed the first human being on the Moon.  

Edward raised his family in Westwood, NJ. He enjoyed family vacations down the shore and camping in the woods, and baseball games at Yankee Stadium.  After retiring, he enjoyed traveling, catching up on his reading and doing his daily Sudoku puzzles. However, his three favorite hobbies were family, family and family.

Edward is survived by his four beloved children, Donna Sapanara, Robert Chilton; Nancy Chilton and Joanne Schneeloch, and their spouses Michael Sapanara, Carol Rayside and James Schneeloch; his seven adored grandchildren, Kristi, Kenneth; Vanessa; Sammy; April, Andrew and Kelly, his nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephew and many friends. He is joining in eternal life his parents, Samuel and Ada Chilton, his sister Katherine and brother Theodore, and his treasured granddaughter, Keri.

Edward will be buried in a private ceremony in Jersey City at 9:00 a.m. on April 7, 2018. There will be a visitation on April 7, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at 12:30 p.m., which will take place at Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton Ave. in New Brunswick, NJ.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Edward’s life.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Alzheimer’s New Jersey at www.alznj.org, with a notation in memory of Edward Chilton.  The family would like to thank and acknowledge the caregivers and all of the staff at Parker at Landing Lane, as well as Stein Hospice.
