John L. Matts, Jr., 79, of Edison, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Newark, he also lived in Irvington before moving to Edison where he spent most of his life. Mr. Matts served in the United States Army as an MP. He loved music and played in bands including the Sabians, and was also an avid woodworker. He was a Crossing Guard in Edison for 20 years, and was an active member and Past Commander of VFW Post 3117, as well as the American Legion Father and Son Post 435. He was predeceased by his wife Susan Matts in 2010. Surviving are his children, Janice Ubl of East Brunswick, John L. Matts III and wife Christine of Monroe Twp; Maureen Saenger and husband Gregg of Jackson, and Kelly Jones of Plainsboro; his sister Frances Williams of Union; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 10 from 1-4 pm at Boylan Funeral Home 10 Wooding Avenue in Edison. Family and friends will gather Monday, July 11 8:30 am to 9 am at the funeral home before leaving for Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Wrightstown.
